The world’s first bona fide diesel-powered sports car – the new 140mph Audi TT 2.0 TDI quattro – brings 50 mpg-plus fuel economy, a 23 percent reduction in CO2 output and EU5 compliance to the 2008 Geneva Auto Show (March 6th to 16th). Far from being just a flight of fancy, the latest TT is production-ready, and opens for UK order in Coupé and Roadster body styles on Thursday March 6th, priced from £26,350 OTR. First deliveries are expected in summer 2008.
The ideal TT TDI engine not only had to complement the much-loved character of the TT, but also had to fit transversely into its compact engine bay. It has the space-efficient shape of the latest 2.0 litre, four-cylinder TDI, and includes performance and refinement-boosting common rail fuel injection incorporating advanced piezo injection technology. Launched to critical acclaim in the new A4 Saloon in 143PS form, the TT has been upgraded to 170PS with an impressive 350 Nm maximum torque output – more than even the 3.2 litre V6 petrol model.
The engine features a new turbocharger with adjustable vanes to allow rapid torque build-up, as well as a sophisticated common rail injection system, whose advanced piezo injector nozzles can perform up to five distinct injection sequences per cycle, the performance ability of the new engine dispels any doubts about its sports car compatibility.
The TT 2.0 TDI quattro Coupé easily reaches its 5,000 rpm limit, thanks to high-tech injection technology and to refinement-boosting balancer shafts. With its 6-speed manual transmission, the car takes just 7.5 seconds to reach 62mph from rest. A top speed of 140mph is possible where conditions allow, and the influence of TDI is made clear by a combined consumption figure of 53.3 mpg.
The stride forward in efficiency over the outgoing 2.0 litre TDI engine also shows in a CO2 figure of 140g/km for the Coupé – over 20 per cent less than the 2.0T FSI petrol model – and in a drastic reduction in untreated emissions of nitrogen oxides. Improvements in combustion chamber thermodynamics mean the new engine can run on up to 60 percent recycled exhaust cooled by the radiator, and ensure that the 2.0 TDI complies with proposed Euro 5 emission limits.
Lightweight Audi Space Frame® (ASF)
The impressive all-round performance of the new TT 2.0 TDI quattro is also due to its lightweight ASF aluminium and steel hybrid body shell, which contributes to impressively low kerb weights of 1,370 kg for the TT 2.0 TDI quattro Coupé, and 1,415 kg for the TT 2.0 TDI quattro Roadster.
The attention to weight-saving also proves its worth in the comfortable, agile handling of the TT which, in the best traditions of all higher torque Audis, is backed up by quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The space-age Audi magnetic ride adaptive damping system, employing specially developed dampers filled with a magnetic fluid that reacts to electrical charge, will also be available as an option for driving enthusiasts who want the very best from the aluminium-rich suspension.
Standard UK specification for the new TT 2.0 TDI quattro mirrors the familiar 2.0T FSI petrol version, offering features such as 17-inch Trapez alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara-upholstered sports seats, electronic climate control and an mp3-compatible 140 watt Audi Concert audio system with single CD drive. The Roadster adds a fully automatic electrically operated soft top and integrated wind deflector.

Wolfsburg / Geneva, 28 February 2008 - Volkswagen will be igniting a fireworks of models in Geneva, with seven international premiere presentations scheduled. The main spotlight will be on the completely re-engineered Scirocco, an all-round sports car, as the highlight of the show. Another vehicle being showcased at Lac Léman is the Golf TDI Hybrid.
This concept car runs on just 3.4 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. The 150-PS Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel also being showcased as a world premiere, represents a technology leap for automobiles run on natural gas. Other Volkswagen world premieres will be the extremely fuel-efficient Sharan BlueMotion (6.0 litres) and the four-wheel-drive Golf Estate 4Motion. The Passat CC will also be on display for the first time ever in Europe.
The first-generation Scirocco was initially presented to the public 34 years ago. That was in Geneva too. Now Volkswagen is celebrating the comeback of its legendary two-door automobile. Thanks to an elongated roof, the vehicle offers room for four adults, making it a sports car that can be used on any day of the year. The Scirocco is driven by a selection of four high-torque, low-consumption TDI and TSI engines of between 90 kW / 122 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. This new sports car will come with a choice of numerous innovative technologies, such as an adaptive chassis control.
With its Golf TDI Hybrid, Volkswagen demonstrates the kind of potential inherent in the combination of high-tech diesel engine, electric motor and 7-speed DSG technology. Exhibited for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show, the concept car consumes no more than 3.4 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres. This powerful full-hybrid Golf TDI Hybrid can be operated either in internal-combustion mode only or in a combination mode of powerful yet thrifty TDI and electric motor. The car is also designed to run on emissions-free electric power only. Power transmission to the front axle is managed by 7-speed DSG technology. In city traffic, the vehicle’s automatic stop-start system will even automatically switch off diesel operations.
The Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel being premiered in Geneva marks the beginning of a new era for natural-gas-fuelled automobiles. Until now, passenger cars operated using eco-friendly, low-consumption natural gas have tended to be "mild mannered". The Passat changes that once and for all with its 110-kW / 150-PS TSI engines. And yet the direct-injection turbo engine in the Passat, specifically designed to run on natural gas, consumes no more than 5.2 kilograms of gas per 100 kilometres. The Passat and the Passat Estate TSI EcoFuel are due to be launched on the market around year-end.
Volkswagen is continuing its BlueMotion campaign in 2008. The latest model in the series is the Sharan BlueMotion on display for the first time at the Geneva show. With an extremely low average fuel consumption of 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, the Sharan BlueMotion uses 0.7 of a litre less than "conventional" models. By the same token, CO2 emissions are reduced from 177 g/km to 159 g/km. These are first-rate values for a seven-seat van with up to 2,610 litres of cargo volume and a permissible gross vehicle weight of 2,510 kilograms. This Volkswagen is driven by a 103-kW / 140-PS TDI engine complete with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The BlueMotion option is available in combination with the Trendline and Comfortline fittings packages. Deliveries of the vehicle are scheduled to commence this summer.
Effective immediately, Volkswagen will be offering the Golf Estate in a version with permanent four-wheel drive. This automobile is designed to enable as much as 100 per cent of the vehicle’s tractive force to be transmitted to the rear wheels if so required in extreme circumstances. Thus, the Golf Estate TDI 4Motion offers the best possible grip even in the most adverse conditions. The 4Motion system is coupled with a fuel-efficient, high-torque TDI engine with 77 KW / 105 PS. The Golf Estate TDI 4Motion accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.9 seconds, has a top speed of 185 km/h and consumes just 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres. One attribute which is bound to be particularly attractive to outfit drivers is that the Golf Estate TDI 4Motion is permitted to tow as much as 1,500 kilograms on gradients of up to twelve per cent – that’s 100 kilograms more than its front-wheel-drive counterpart.

The Opel Meriva Concept takes flexibility to new heights with its innovative FlexDoors system, which consists of rear-hinged rear doors that swing open toward the back of the car. As the B-pillars have been purposely retained for passive security reasons, the Meriva Concept’s front and rear doors can also be opened independently of each other. Other rear-hinged rear doors already on the market can only be opened after the front door has been opened. This innovation makes access to the car interior much easier and also offers a range of safety benefits over conventional car doors. In the Meriva Concept, this innovation is combined with the highly variable FlexSpace rear seating system familiar from the production Meriva.
The FlexDoors system also enhances comfort and functionality, as the highest point of the roof – just behind the B-pillars – is exactly where the passengers enter and exit the vehicle. This architecture enabled designers to create a very dynamic and unique silhouette, with the arched roof line sloping down to the C-pillars.
Especially eye-catching is the dynamic “wave” in the window line just behind the B-pillars, which provides an excellent all-round view for rear passengers, particularly for children. The body also boasts the distinctive ”blade” bodyside form, which was a design element of the GTC Coupé and Flextreme. Another feature is the U-shaped windshield, which stretches up and back over the rear passengers’ heads – echoing the Astra GTC’s panorama windshield. The slim A-pillars and windshield pulled far down ensure plenty of light and a spacious interior atmosphere. Both elements contribute to the outstanding all-round visibility for the occupants.

Geneva, Feb 26, 2008 - The 78th International Motor Show in Geneva will see the European debut of the Chrysler ecoVoyager concept vehicle as well as the debut of the Chrysler 300C SRT® Design Group. These vehicles are joined by the all-new Chrysler Grand Voyager that began arriving in European markets in the first quarter of 2008.

The Chrysler ecoVoyager concept vehicle combines elegant Chrysler styling with range-extending electric-vehicle technology. The ecoVoyager won the best concept truck by EyesOn Design award during the North American International Auto Show.
The design concept explores “elegant simplicity” by taking advantage of the space normally occupied by a conventional engine and transmission. This allowed for a drastically reduced front overhang.
The extended-range electric-vehicle technology uses an electric motor to drive the wheels with power supplied primarily by a lithium-ion battery pack. The electric motor develops 200 kilowatts for brisk acceleration. The range-extending technology is a small, advanced hydrogen fuel cell which would bring the Chrysler ecoVoyager’s total range to more than 483 kilometres (300 miles) with zero harmful emissions.
New Chrysler 300C SRT Design Group
The Chrysler 300C SRT Design Group further broadens the packages available on the popular American premium sedan. It is an all-new look available for the 300C Sedan and Touring, adapting the styling cues from the high-performance SRT8 models. The engine with this package is the efficient and powerful 3.0L CRD engine. The 300C SRT Design Group is available exclusively in markets outside of North America and will begin to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of 2008.
All-new Chrysler Grand Voyager
Chrysler continues to bring great beautifully engineered products to market. The most recent example is the Chrysler Grand Voyager which brings a cleaner, more tailored exterior design along with a sophisticated, refined interior and a long list of new or improved features. The new Grand Voyager features both the Swivel ’n Go™ seating system that enables a new level of family or business communications in the second and third rows, and a one-touch power folding third-row seat – both unique features that, yet again, set Chrysler MPVs apart from the competition.

MyGIG
The MyGIG™ Multimedia Infotainment System is available in even more Chrysler brand vehicles in 2008. The system is a completely integrated Harman/Kardon touch-screen audio, entertainment and hands-free communication system. MyGIG also is available with an optional full-screen navigation system, which adds voice recognition.
This next-generation navigation radio features a 16.5cm (6.5-inch) Thin Film Transistor display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colours, providing a three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. The MyGIG full-screen navigation system allows voice-activated commands and includes many new features for music, sound, movies and personalised picture displays. Examples of the embedded technology include a 20-gigabyte hard drive for storing and organising music and pictures, an Universal Serial Bus (USB) port for downloading of WMA, MP3 and JPG files onto the hard drive, UConnect® Hands-free Communication System with Bluetooth® technology to provide voice-activated wireless communication between the occupants’ compatible mobile phones and the vehicle’s onboard receiver. MyGIG offers functionality in six languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish).

In 2007, Chrysler brand sales comprised 34 per cent of total Chrysler LLC sales outside North America. The Chrysler 300C is one of the company's three top-selling vehicles outside North America, and it led the Chrysler brand sales for the year, growing 7 per cent over 2006.

In November 2007, Maybach had revived the aura of the grand carriages of days gone by with its Landaulet study. A limited number of vehicles will be built in the Manufaktur workshops in Sindelfingenover a restricted period. The Maybach Landaulet was the response to customer requests
The Maybach name epitomises high-end luxury motoring. It stands for effortlessly superior automotive engineering at the very highest level, timeless and stylish elegance, and precision craftsmanship. Since approximately two-thirds of Maybach customers wish to tailor their cars exactly to their own tastes and ideas, Maybach is constantly expanding its exclusive range of customisation options.
The Maybach Landaulet was prompted by the clientele of Maybach. Experts understand the landaulet to be an automobile whose front section has a fixed roof, but whose rear has a folding top to allow the passengers to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. Landaulets were formerly often used as parade cars in which the occupants could present themselves to the people at the roadside. Large folding roof for the passengers in the rear
In technical terms the Maybach Landaulet is based on the Maybach 62 S - which can claim to be the world’s most powerful series-produced chauffeured saloon. Maybach technicians have removed the rear roof module in order to afford passengers an unobstructed view of the sky above. The side walls have been invisibly reinforced with an integral tubular steel structure. As these measures have not altered the silhouette of the luxury saloon, the generously dimensioned doors and the complete interior with reclining seats remain unchanged.
When closed, the black soft-top of the Maybach Landaulet rests on the roof frame and is wind and weather-proof. When requested by the passengers, the chauffeur operates a switch in the centre console. Fully automatically, electric motors then open the two locks which fasten the folding top to the roof frame; the top is folded and gently laid onto the parcel shelf in the rear, together with its integral rear windscreen made of single-layer safety glass. One hydraulic cylinder each on the left and right side open and close the top virtually noiselessly. The necessary driving power is furnished by an electro-hydraulic motor hidden away in the side of the boot. The opening and closing of the roof are choreographed to take place in less than 20 seconds. Of course, even with the top down the luggage compartment is always fully accessible.
The chauffeur is able to enclose the folded roof with a fine leather tonneau cover, which both conceals the roof mechanism from view and completes the overall picture of outstanding elegance. The tonneau cover comes in the same colour as the interior of the rear compartment, thereby creating a harmonious, organic link with the exterior. A logo reading "Maybach Landaulet" in the colour specified by the customer is embroidered onto the cover, where it is visible to following traffic. The model on show sports an elegant and discreet white-on-white logo: after all, Maybach saloons do not wish to achieve their effect with superficial stylistic features, but rather with the distinguished air of a first-class butler.
Exclusive workplace for the chauffeur, exquisite luxury for passengers
The Maybach Landaulet is a masterpiece of automotive engineering and comes with its very own exciting, yet distinguished, authentic style. The interior colour scheme of the model shown in Genevais another point, which illustrates that the Maybach Landaulet is conceived as a chauffeur-driven car. The passenger compartment in the spacious rear of the vehicle is styled a tasteful white, whereas the chauffeur’s area is entirely in black. Though this does make the respective roles quite clear, the seat behind the steering wheel of the Maybach Landaulet should certainly be one of the most coveted workplaces for a chauffeur. The chauffeur’s area is modelled on the successful Maybach 62 S, but has been upgraded in a number of important ways. The centre console and all trim elements have black piano lacquer surfaces. And for the extensive leather appointments Maybach uses an exclusive, smooth black leather.
Generous spaciousness and first-class comfort
The passengers in the rear with its optional contrasting colour scheme enjoy their place in the sun. Theytravel on opulent reclining seats upholstered in exquisite Grand Nappa leather in an environment of utmost luxury and exquisite style. The basis for outstanding comfort is the generous spaciousness of the rear passenger compartment, which the Maybach Landaulet has adopted unchanged from the Maybach 62 S. Two superbly comfortable individual seats positively invite the rear passengers to sit back and relax. As a highlight, the elegant individual rear seats allow even tall passengers to enjoy a comfortable reclining position, which travellers would normally expect to find only in the first-class sections of modern passenger jets. Rear passengers can call up a pre-set reclined position at the push of a button, whereupon the backrest smoothly tilts backwards by up to 47 degrees whilst, simultaneously, a lower-leg support and footrest extend forwards. This means that occupants can enjoy the ride in an extremely relaxed reclined position. Of course, the seat can easily be adjusted to each passenger's own particular comfort needs.
Seat comfort is further enhanced by pneumatically adjustable air cushions in the backrest and a program-controlled massage function. Pressing the "Pulse" button inflates and deflates the central air cushion in the lumbar region at precisely defined intervals and with varying intensity. As confirmed by orthopaedic experts, this pulsating action relieves stress in the back muscles and boosts the metabolism of the intervertebral discs. Each relaxing back massage lasts for five minutes and can be repeated as often as required.
Exquisite appointments
Highly skilled craftsmanship, unerring taste, the use of unique materials plus the very highest standards of quality played a decisive role in the design of the rear, and have produced an outstanding result. Maybach Manufaktur has fitted out the passenger compartment of the vehicle on show almost completely in exquisite Seychelles White Nappa leather.
A contrast is provided in the vehicle on show by inserts and decorative trim in black. But white and black is not the only theme: warm and cool contrasts also help to create atmosphere. Some surfaces in the rear passenger compartment feature glossy black piano lacquer, while several elements are made of Star Galaxy granite from India. This rare stone is deep black in colour, with numerous warm, gold inclusions. The standard specification of the new Maybach Landaulet comes with a choice of three leather appointment options, and a choice of two trim element finishes – black piano lacquer combined with carbon-fibre trim or fine anthracite poplar.
Designed specifically for open-top motoring
Maybach has adapted the luxurious rear compartment to the requirements of open-top motoring. For instance, the rear head restraints are slightly larger than on the saloon and effectively help reduce wind turbulence. Another slim wind deflector is automatically raised at speedsabove 70 km/h to further reduce the risk of any uncomfortable draughts. The deflector, which measures around five centimetres, can be activated manually at any time. The switch is conveniently positioned for rear passengers in the centre console.
The intercom in the passenger compartment is fitted with an additional handset in the centre console, allowing passengers to communicate with the driver while the roof is down.
Sophisticated integral system with crash-responsive backrests for outstanding safety
As well as being exceptionally comfortable, the reclining seats in the Maybach Landaulet offer an outstanding level of safety - in any position. The restraint system incorporating the belt tensioner, belt-force limiter and sidebag is integrated in the backrests, meaning that the rear passengers can enjoy optimal protection even when the seats are fully reclined. Further safety features include a crash-responsive backrest which is moved into an upright position in the event of a frontal impact and the tensioners on the belt buckles which also tension the lap belt in the event of an accident.
Partition with electric transparency control
Designed from the outset as a chauffeur-driven limousine, the Maybach Landaulet is equipped with a partition. The lower section of the partition consists of an aluminium sandwich structure. The upper section comprises an electro-transparent laminated glass panel that can be lowered by electric motor.
Two separate systems for a perfect climate all round
Driving enjoyment of the highest calibre is further enhanced by the climate comfort afforded by the Maybach Landaulet. To provide effective climate control in the spacious interior, Maybach equips the vehicle with two of the most sophisticated automatic climate control units currently available - one for the front compartment and one specially for the rear compartment. Thanks to its high performance capability and intelligent control set-up, the system allows the occupants in the front as well as the passengers in the rear to adjust and program the climate control system individually. The parameters of the climate control system have been adapted to the conditions in the Maybach Landaulet and ensure that open-air travel remains a pleasure even under adverse climatic conditions.
State-of-the-art entertainment and communications
The rear console is the centrepiece for entertainment, communications and travelling pleasure in the Maybach Landaulet. Numerous stowage compartments enable the rear passengers to tidy away both large and small items conveniently. The exquisitely designed interior door panels alone house ten stowage compartments whose lids open at the push of a button.
However, it is the multifunctional centre console between the seats that forms the heart of the stowage concept in the rear of the Maybach cars. This is where Maybach engineers have grouped everything relating to the entertainment and pleasure of the rear-seat passengers: a DVD player, six-disc CD changer, a cooler compartment with its own electric compressor and an intelligent system, which holds silver goblets and champagne bottle safely in position. The champagne flutes - specifically designed for the Maybach in high-grade sterling silver – are held by clips that automatically grip them above the base when they are put down. The clips are released as soon as the rear passenger picks up the flute again.
Top-quality fine paintwork
The Maybach Landaulet on show in Genevacomes with exclusive paintwork in Antigua White. This gleaming white paint finish is built up by specialists layer by layer ‑ almost twice as many layers as normally found on other high-quality automobiles. The new Maybach Landaulet is painted in Baltic Black or Nevada Silver in a sophisticated process that ensures the highest standards of quality.
Visual highlights are provided by 20-inch aluminium wheels, also available as an option at no extra charge painted in the vehicle colour or burnished to a high sheen in a special finishing process. These are shod in Michelin Pilot Sport high-performance size 275/45 R 20 tyres manufactured specifically for Maybach.
Individual appointments at no extra charge
As testimony to its exceptional customer focus, Maybach also meets many special Landaulet requirements at no extra charge for the customer. For instance, Maybach Landaulet clients can choose the individual appointments for their vehicle from the entire Maybach paint finish, leather and trim element range at no extra charge. An extra charge only applies to highly exclusive requirements such as special paint finishes based on the customer's own specifications, select leather colours, trim elements in natural stone or the electro-transparent partition.
Engine and suspension
The Maybach Landaulet is powered by an uprated V12 engine which Maybach engineers have developed further for the Maybach 57 S and Maybach 62 S together with the specialists at Mercedes-AMG. Thanks to twin turbochargers and water intercooling, the V12 develops a maximum output of 450 kW/612 hp from a displacement of 5980 cubic centimetres. This is continuously available between 4800 and 5100 rpm, and the engine also delivers an impressive maximum torque of 1000 newton metres between 2000 and 4000 rpm.
In line with the Maybach approach, the twelve-cylinder biturbo engine is hand-assembled in the Mercedes-AMG engine workshops, or Manufaktur. The "One man, one engine" philosophy is reflected by the signature of the technician responsible on the characteristic model plate, which is attached to the engine cover of the V12 biturbo - a guarantee of the greatest care and highest quality.
Equipped with the AIRMATIC DC (Dual Control) electronically controlled air suspension system and the Adaptive Damping System (ADS II), the Maybach Landaulet achieves an outstanding level of ride comfort whilst at the same time proving that even a prestigious automobile can display excellent agility and handling qualities.
In addition to large, internally ventilated brake discs - with twin callipers at the front - both the Maybach Landaulet and the Maybach 62 S are equipped with two electro-hydraulic Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™) braking systems working in tandem. Together with ESP®, ASR, ABS and Brake Assist, this provides the Maybach Landaulet with the very latest in effective, high-tech handling control systems.

Like all Maybach saloons, the Maybach Landaulet also benefits from the unrivalled experience of sister brand Mercedes-Benz in the development and production of high-quality cars in the luxury segment. Stuttgart -- Mar 04, 2008 -- Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz is continuing its commitment to further reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions with new products in eight model series which will take centre stage at this year's Geneva Motor Show.
Mercedes-Benz Vision GLK Bluetec Hybrid Concept
The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID lends further substance to the Stuttgart-based automotive manufacturer's claim of developing the world's most efficient and cleanest-running passenger car engines. Equipped with a state-of-the-art diesel-hybrid system, the study version of the forthcoming Mercedes off-roader excels with NEDC fuel consumption figures of a mere 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres, and complies with even the strictest emissions regulations courtesy of the highly efficient BLUETEC treatment process.
The new BlueEFFICIENCY C-Class saloons as well as the coupé and roadster models likewise distinguish themselves by burning as much as 12 per cent less fuel than their predecessors, whilst still promising supreme safety, comfort and refinement.
The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID gives a further foretaste of the new off-roader from Mercedes-Benz, whilst providing a fresh demonstration of the ingenious BLUETEC emission control technology's remarkable efficiency. The four-cylinder diesel engine fitted in the study combines with a hybrid module to deliver a total output of 165 kW/224 hp and 560 Newton metres of torque. The NEDC fuel consumption of the Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID makes even more impressive reading: a mere 5.9 litres for every 100 kilometres. This enables the Mercedes study to achieve a lower CO2 emission figure than any other model in the SUV market segment in the world: just 157 grams per kilometre. As a result of the highly efficient BLUETEC emission control with AdBlue injection, the GLK BLUETEC HYBRID is able to comply with the world's toughest exhaust emissions standards, such as BIN5 in the US and EURO 6.
In the hybrid drive train of the Mercedes study, a completely new four-cylinder CDI diesel unit with a displacement of 2.2 litres acts as the internal combustion engine. The technical highlights of this extremely compact and refined CDI unit with a geared camshaft drive mounted on the flywheel side include latest-generation common-rail direct injection with an injection pressure of 2000 bar and innovative piezoelectric injectors, as well as a two-stage turbocharger system. The compact hybrid module – a disc-shaped electric motor between the CDI engine and the automatic transmission – improves both the environmental compatibility and the effectiveness of the drive system.
The electric motor acts as both a generator and starter, and offer a two-pronged advantage: firstly it contributes decisively to fuel economy, and secondly it significantly enhances driving pleasure by virtue of the boost effect. The electric motor backs up the internal combustion engine during the fuel-intensive acceleration phase by contributing its maximum torque of 160 Newton metres. As a result the occupants experience an effortless rush of power right from the start.
In addition the system features a comfortable start-stop function which switches the engine off in certain circumstances – for example when the car is stopped at traffic lights. When it comes to braking, the procedures are reversed: the electric motor now acts as a generator, feeding the electrical energy obtained from the recuperation process into an efficient yet compact lithium-ion battery. This energy can be retrieved when needed – for the next "boost" phase, for example. All these processes take place fully automatically, thanks to intelligent drive management.
With the VISION GLK BLUETEC HYBRID, a distinctive character is entering the SUV stage whose special appeal lies in a combination of the angular original design of the legendary G-Class and the typical design features of today's Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. Crisp lines and large taut body surfaces come together with the bodyshell characteristics of practical off-roaders, such as short overhangs, an upright front end, slim A-pillars, a steep windscreen and tight roof contours. An excellent view of the vehicle body and good all-round visibility go together with the raised seating position to enhance day-to-day suitability and ensure relaxed driving.
The Vision GLK BLUETEC HYBRID demonstrates how outstanding performance could be paired with highly economical fuel consumption in the future – a combination that need not be confined to the forthcoming GLK-Class.
BlueEFFICIENCY C-Class models that consume twelve per cent less fuel
Mercedes-Benz has concocted a BlueEFFICIENCY package for the four-cylinder C 180 KOMPRESSOR and C 200 CDI models which lowers fuel consumption in the two saloons by as much as twelve per cent, while retaining the high levels of comfort and safety that Mercedes is renowned for. Instead of the previous 6.1 litres of diesel, the BlueEFFICIENCY version of the 100-kW/136-hp C 200 CDI now makes do with just 5.1 litres for every 100 kilometres. This equates to 135 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. In the case of the C 180 KOMPRESSOR Mercedes-Benz has reduced the engine's displacement from 1796 to 1597 cubic centimetres, but output (115 kW/156 hp) and torque (230 Newton metres) remain unchanged. It returns fuel consumption figures of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres, a whole 0.9 litres or twelve per cent below the figure for the standard production model.
For the new BlueEFFICIENCY models, Mercedes engineers have harnessed potentials from all fields of development to reduce weight, aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance yet further, and to organise the onboard energy management of these saloons even more efficiently. The extensive BlueEFFICIENCY package includes a newly developed lightweight front windscreen amongst its many features. In addition to lightweight construction measures, Mercedes-Benz also devoted particular attention to reducing rolling resistance and aerodynamic drag.
The specialists at Mercedes have carefully honed the excellent aerodynamics of the C‑Class with a series of intelligent details, resulting in an exemplary Cd figure of 0.25 in the BlueEFFICIENCY models. This represents an improvement of seven per cent on the value for the standard production models. Intelligent control of ancillary units and the reduction of friction losses also makes an important
contribution to reducing fuel consumption. In the BlueEFFICIENCY models of the C-Class, the power steering system is controlled on a needs-driven and therefore energy-saving basis. The engine must therefore generate less energy for driving the servo pump.
A newly developed gearshift display in the cockpit informs the driver when he should change gear to save fuel. In addition to gearshift recommendations, the instrument cluster features a newly developed display showing the present fuel consumption.
C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY with direct petrol injection
Mercedes-Benz Also is also be exhibiting the new C 350 BlueEFFICIENCY with spray-guided direct injection at the Geneva Motor Show. This technology has previously been exclusive to just the CLS-Class and the E-Class, but is due to become available for the C-Class too from late 2008. Despite generating a higher power output and even greater torque, the new C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY consumes around ten per cent less fuel than the C 350 saloon with the current V6 engine. This innovative new model is therefore set to offer a hitherto unrivalled combination of power delivery, agility, safety, economy and environmental compatibility in this vehicle class.
The CGI engine summons up an output of 215 kW/292 hp and 365 Newton metres of peak torque at 3000 rpm, 15 kW/20 hp and 15 Newton metres more respectively than the current V6 unit with port injection. Thanks to the state-of-the-art engine technology, fuel consumption of the C 350 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY has been cut to approx. 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres (provisional NEDC figure), one litre below the figure for the current C 350. As such, the new six-cylinder engine makes a major contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. These significantly improved output and fuel consumption figures are achieved whilst still using cost-efficient premium grade petrol (RON 95).
Mercedes-Benz became the first car maker to put spray-guided direct petrol injection into series production in 2006. This technology is markedly superior to the direct injection system with wall-guided combustion used by other car makers, as the Mercedes technology achieves far better fuel utilisation due to its higher thermodynamic efficiency, meaning both reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.
The new-generation SL-Class: sportier than ever before
The new Mercedes dream machines celebrating their public premiere in Geneva are spearheaded by the SL-Class. Mercedes-Benz has refined, improved and advanced the roadster further to a level of detail and extent that goes well beyond a mere model facelift. The result is a car that combines sportiness, safety and comfort into an unprecedented synthesis in this vehicle class, offering Mercedes motoring refinement at sports car level.
The new, decidedly sporty and assured exterior design reflects the handling characteristics of this Mercedes roadster which, thanks to a new direct-steer system, now boasts yet greater agility while offering even more safety and comfort too. Two new six-cylinder engines will round off the SL range from spring 2008: the SL 280 develops 170 kW/ 231 hp and gets the SL sports car realm off to a highly attractive start. The SL 350 is powered by a newly developed and particularly free-revving sports engine. Output has increased by 16 per cent to 232 kW/316 hp compared to the previous 3.5-litre engine, while maximum torque has improved by 10 Nm to 360 Newton metres. This powerpack accelerates the new SL 350 from standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, making it 0.4 seconds faster than the outgoing SL 350. In this sports car, however, a higher output does not bring higher fuel consumption with it: at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, the SL 350 is 0.4 litres more economical than the preceding 200-kW/272-hp model on the NEDC driving cycle.
The flagship models in the SL range continue to be the SL 500 with a V8 engine and the twelve-cylinder SL 600. Their engines consume up to 0.4 litres less fuel per 100 kilometres than before.
The SL consolidates its substantial lead in the field of safety with bi-xenon headlamps and the optional Intelligent Light System, whose lighting functions are purpose-designed for typical driving situations. One new feature onboard is the AIRSCARF neck-level heating system invented and patented by Mercedes-Benz. This optionally available system enhances comfort when driving with the roof down, extending the roadster season until well into the colder part of the year.
The front-end design of the SL-Class shows that Mercedes-Benz has reinforced the sporty attributes of the roadster even further. The centrepiece is a wide and therefore very imposing radiator grille, whose arrow shape symbolises virtues such as its go-getting performance potential. A horizontal fin adds visual width to the radiator grille and thereby emphasises the muscular appearance of the SL's front end, which consequently seems surprisingly new yet, at the same time, reassuringly familiar.
CLS: new six-cylinder engine and fine-tuning down to the last detail
The unique, four-door CLS Coupé – which pioneered a new automotive segment – has also been made more attractive than ever by careful fine-tuning. The front aspect is dominated by a modified radiator grille, which now has two rather than the previous four louvres. The exterior mirrors also have a new shape, with integrated, arrow-shaped LED indicator repeaters and a mirror surface which is over 30 per cent larger. The tail lights also now feature LED technology, with the brake lamps, tail lamps and indicator lamps all using the extra-fast-reacting light-emitting diodes.
Great attention to detail was paid while updating the interior too: modifications include a restyled leather steering wheel in a three-spoke design with multifunction buttons, as well as a new-look instrument cluster, Here, white dials now contrast distinctly with the chased surface of the backplate. New chestnut wood inserts replace the previous trim.
Like the SL, SLK and CLC, the CLS also benefits from new-generation infotainment systems. These high-performance units combine ease of operation and intuitive menus with perfect in-vehicle entertainment. Features include speed-sensitive volume control, an MP3-compatible CD and DVD player, as well as a Bluetooth interface which can establish a wireless connection between a mobile phone and the vehicle's hands-free system. Audio 20, Audio 20 CD with CD changer, Audio 50 and Audio 50 APS with DVD changer and the LINGUATRONIC voice-control system now feature a 5-inch colour monitor. The COMAND APS comes with a high-resolution 6.5-inch colour display, LINGUATRONIC for audio, navigation and telephone calls, a music register for storing audio files, plus an SD memory card slot.
As the new entry-level model, Mercedes-Benz offers the CLS 280 with an up‑to‑date 2996 cc V6 engine developing a maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp and a peak torque of 300 Newton metres. Combined fuel consumption on the NEDC driving cycle is 9.8 - 10.0 litres per 100 kilometres. The second V6 petrol model in the range is the CLS 350 CGI. Its advanced six-cylinder engine with piezo-electric direct injection and a spray-guided combustion system musters 215 kW/292 hp and has an impressively low NEDC fuel consumption of 9.1 to 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres.
Under the bonnet of the CLS 500 is a V8 drive unit with a displacement of 5.5 litres and a maximum output of 285 kW/388 hp. The CLS 320 CDI with its 165-kW/224-hp V6 diesel engine excels above all with its high torque of 540 Newton metres accompanied by a low diesel fuel consumption of 7.6 to 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres. All CLS models are equipped with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission as standard.
CLC: new Sports Coupé with CDI engines in the five-litre consumption class
Mercedes-Benz is unveiling a stand-alone model series at the Geneva Motor Show in the guise of the new CLC, the compelling entry-level model in the Stuttgart-based brand's coupé family. The compact body dimensions and powerful proportions underline the sporty appearance of the new CLC. With its striking coupé radiator grille, which has a large Mercedes star at its centre, as well as the new projection-beam headlamps, the Sports Coupé stays true to the current Mercedes design idiom. The large boot lid conceals a variable luggage compartment with a capacity of up to 1100 litres. The tail lights, the long row of LEDs forming the third brake light and the rear bumper subdivide the rear end and accentuate its width.
The interior of the new Mercedes-Benz CLC is akin to a modern bespoke suit, having a precise and comfortable fit. Sports seats with further improved lateral support, a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control and brushed aluminium trim all come as standard.
The new CLC is available with a choice of four four-cylinder and two six-cylinder engines developing outputs from 90 kW/122 hp to 200 kW/272 hp. Thanks to its up-to-date turbodiesel engines, the Sports Coupé ranks in the five-litre fuel consumption category: the CLC 200 CDI limits itself to 5.8 to 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC), i.e. up to 10.8 per cent less than the preceding model. The CDI models are capable of covering over 1000 kilometres with just one tank of fuel. The 135-kW/184-hp power unit in the CLC 200 KOMPRESSOR now has 15 kW/20 hp more output, and consumes only 7.8 to 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the NEDC driving cycle – up to 0.7 litres less than before.
CL: permanent all-wheel drive with no fuel penalty
The Mercedes Coupé family continues to be headed by the luxurious CL-Class, which offers the widest model range in this vehicle class with the CL 500, CL 600, CL 63 AMG and CL 65 AMG. In addition, the new CL 500 4MATIC with permanent all-wheel drive will be joining the line-up from summer 2008. This two-door model is equipped with a 285 kW/388 hp V8 engine, and in addition to 4MATIC it features innovations such as the Intelligent Light System and the preventive occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® as standard.
Mercedes-Benz has further refined all aspects of its all-wheel drive system, and uses the latest-generation system in the CL 500 4MATIC – the same one that has already proved so successful in the S-Class. 4MATIC is permanently active and therefore requires no response time to come to the driver's aid in unfavourable weather and driving conditions. As a result, critical situations can be mastered with greater ease.
With a weight of just 70 kilograms, the newly-developed 4MATIC is the lightest drive system of its kind. The combined NEDC fuel consumption of the CL 500 4MATIC is 12.1 litres per 100 kilometres, which puts it on a par with the rear-wheel drive CL 500 – a further bonus of the new, highly efficient Mercedes all-wheel drive system. The CL 500 4MATIC requires just 5.4 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h, and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.
SLK: even more driving pleasure with considerably lower fuel consumption
Following a comprehensive model facelift, the Mercedes-Benz SLK is now yet more dynamic and provides an even more emotion-charged driving experience. The most important visual changes include a redesigned front and rear end, as well as a carefully modified interior with a new instrument cluster and three-spoke sports steering wheel. The V6 sports engine from the SL-Class is also deployed in the new SLK 350, where it develops an output of 224 kW/305 hp at 6500 rpm – 24 kW/33 hp more than the six-cylinder unit in the previous SLK 350. The peak torque has also been boosted, by 10 Nm, and now stands at 360 Nm when the engine is running at 4900 rpm. Despite this higher output and excellent performance figures, the fuel consumption of the SLK 350 has been significantly reduced. Its combined fuel consumption with the six-speed manual transmission is now only 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres, which represents a remarkable reduction of 1.1 litres for every 100 kilometres.
In addition to the SLK 350, the four-cylinder model SLK 200 KOMPRESSOR and the six-cylinder SLK 280 continue to form part of this compact Mercedes roadster range: the output of the supercharged four-cylinder engine has increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 135 kW/184 hp, while fuel consumption has been lowered by one litre to 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres. The NEDC fuel consumption of the SLK 280 (170 kW/231 hp) has been reduced by 0.4 litres to 9.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The SLK 55 AMG continues to be powered by the familiar 5.5-litre V8 engine developing 265 kW/360 hp.
The designers have honed the looks of the cult two-seater for added sportiness. Eye-catching features include the new-look front bumper with a modified air-dam arrangement and a more pronounced arrow shape. The tail end has also been remodelled by the design team, with the diffuser-look styling at the bottom giving the roadster an even more powerful appearance from the rear too. Trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes and dark-tinted tail lights do even more to accentuate this impression. The exterior mirrors now have LED indicator repeaters with a pronounced arrow shape, and also have a larger mirror area.
The name says it all: the Viano X-CLUSIVE special model
The airy, spacious feel of an MPV coupled with the exclusive appointments of a luxury saloon and the technical and visual attributes of a sports car – the new Viano X-CLUSIVE conjures up this exceptional combination. The interior pampers passengers with an extremely high standard of comfort. Features include soft carpeting, six leather-upholstered individual seats, which can be arranged to face each other in the rear, a multifunction steering wheel, plus leather trim for the shift lever and parts of the door panelling.
The new special model is powered exclusively by high-performance six-cylinder engines developing 150 kW/204 hp or 190 kW/258 hp. Power is transferred to the wheels via a five-speed automatic transmission.
Both powerplants are partnered by the latest emission control systems, allowing them to meet EU4 standards. And making economical use of fuel benefits not only the owner's wallet but, above all, the environment too.
