- Fascinating product lineup is unique: From the New Beetle cult-convertible to the Bentley Azure high-end cruiser
- Eight open-air models: Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Volkswagen offer the world’s greatest variety of convertibles under one corporate roof

It is high summer and so it is high season for convertibles. According to a recent study by the German Federal Vehicle Registration Authority, most of them are being driven around the Starnberger See and in the Hochtaunus region. Meanwhile, the biggest lineup of open-air cars – worldwide – is offered by the Volkswagen Corporation.

The convertible and roadster products of the brands Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini and Volkswagen span a range of no less than eight models with 39 engine variants. Based on the motto "as you like", there is the eternally youthful New Beetle convertible from Volkswagen as well as the kingly Bentley Azure – the uncompromising Audi TT Roadster, the Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster conceptualized on the Formula car level, the clever Volkswagen Eos, the breathtaking Bentley Continental GTC, the classic and timeless Audi A4 convertible and the powerful and imposing Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. Never before has there been such a large variety of open-air cars from one corporation.

New Beetle convertible, Volkswagen. Entry into the club of convertible drivers is made easy by the New Beetle Cabriolet from Volkswagen. Its cult design magically attracts glances. Its visual image is reminiscent of its great grandfather, the Beetle convertible. Not just the body elements, but primarily the folding fabric roof, are borrowed from the bestseller of those days; they transport its mythological aura into the new era. Buyers who like to make decisions will be happy with the engines of the smart convertibles: Options include four gasoline engines with powers ranging from 55 kW / 75 PS to 110 kW / 150 PS and a TDI (77 kW /105 PS).

Eos, Volkswagen. The Eos from Volkswagen also assumes a special position. Its brilliantly constructed, five-section CSC roof (coupé, sun and convertible roof) consists of about 480 parts and converts the car from a coupé to a convertible in 25 seconds. A majority of the roof consists of tinted safety glass. The advantage: A friendly interior atmosphere and a "pleasant mood" are guaranteed even on rainy days. The CSC roof also made it possible to design a very low profile windshield frame. This produces a harmonious design and sky without limits above the driver and front passenger. The overall technical concept and agile engines with power outputs between 102 kW / 140 PS and 184 kW / 250 PS make the Eos one of the most successful German convertibles.

VW Convertibles

TT Roadster, Audi. Pure and straightforward is Audi’s design icon, the TT Roadster. In its second generation, this timeless design code of the legendary predecessor has been further honed. When it comes to the convertible top, Audi is remaining true to the roadster philosophy in this new model too and has given the TT a soft top. As standard equipment on the powerful 184 kW (250 PS) TT Roadster 3.2 quattro, and as an option on the 2.0 TFSI with 147 kW (200 PS), there is a fast closing, electrically-driven top that can be operated up to a speed of 50 km/h. The variably configurable electronic "magnetic ride" suspension system and the "s-tronic" transmission generate pure sports car atmosphere on request.

A4 Cabriolet, Audi. On this four-seat and very spacious A4 Cabriolet, the convertible’s fabric top that is almost aristocratic in elegance deserves a lot of attention. Even in the basic version it is extremely high-end, and what is known as an "acoustic top" is offered as an option. When the top is closed, the acoustic level of the car interior is comparable to that of the sedan. As a standard feature, the electro-hydraulic top can be operated while driving. When it comes to engines, nearly the entire A4 lineup is ready: From the four-cylinder TDI with 103 kW (140 PS) to the powerful 309 kW (420 PS) eight cylinder in the RS4. The Audi A4 convertible has long been a highly innovative classic among four-seat convertibles.

Murciélago LP 640 Roadster, Lamborghini. This is the most powerful roadster in the world. The name refers to Murciélago – the German bat. In the open-air version this exclusive sports car is called the Lamborghini Murciélago LP 640 Roadster. The name alone can give goose bumps and a hint at what it is all about : 640 PS! The centerpiece of this super sports car has 6.5 liters of displacement and lets the Italian car race to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Not until 330 km/h does the twelve-cylinder with its V formation get stalemated by wind forces. The extremist demands receptive, natural handling by its driver. That is because with the all-wheel Lamborghini one always encounters new friends who simply cannot tear themselves away from this car.

Gallardo Spyder, Lamborghini. Positioned one performance notch below the LP640, yet still far beyond the rest of the sports car world, is the Gallardo Spyder – the fighting bull. This two-seater has a purist style and enraptures all of the senses. Inside its aroma is one of the highest quality leather, and its airplane-inspired design puts forth an extremely dynamic appearance and offers a wonderful tactile experience. The rear of the car projects a veritable concert as soon as the engine is started, as only a ten-cylinder can scream. 382 kW (520 PS) propels the aluminum space frame racer to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. The Spyder clears the 300 km/h hurdle with as much playful ease as the Murciélago.

Continental GTC, Bentley. Offered simultaneously by the Bentley company are two of the most luxurious convertibles sold in the world, both of them brand new. The Bentley Continental GTC – as the name suggests – plays the role of the open grand touring car. For many enthusiasts the Bentley Continental GTC is one of the most beautiful convertibles today. Here too, the complex roof system can automatically fold down electro-hydraulically even while driving (up to 30 km/h). The grandiose W12 engine spoils the driver with its marvelous sound. It generates its impressive power from six liters of displacement and twin turbocharging. 411 kW (560 PS) of power and 650 Newton-meter of torque make the world flyby at ICE express train speed. Its top speed is an incredible 312 km/h (306 km/h with top down). The power is distributed to all four wheels. Despite all of its talents in the top speed range, the enjoyment provided aboard this Bentley is not just a question of the speedometer display.

Azure, Bentley. The owner of a Bentley Azure can expect the finest of club atmospheres. Among the cars of this world, the four-seat convertible is one of the most grand and beautiful. Its tradition-rich design makes it – like the Continental GTC – untouchable, with intrinsic value for all times. Four adults can enjoy a level of comfort that defines the maximum of what is possible. And the engine? Whether for open cruising or closed sprints – it is a masterpiece. Two turbochargers with charge air cooling push the 6.75-Liter eight cylinder engine to a peak power of 336 kW (456 PS). 875 Newton-meter of torque lend emphatic power to each movement of the gas pedal. If desired: 274 km/h are feasible. But here again it should be said: Impressive performance has little in common with haste.

Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion
Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion

Wolfsburg, 18 July 2007 - At Volkswagen, BlueMotion is the label for the most economic models in a class. It started with the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion in Summer 2006. The Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion is now available and the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion will follow in the autumn.

These models are also constantly being further developed as standing still would, of course, represent a step backwards. As a result, Volkswagen has managed to cut the already lowest consumption in the Polo class, which was achieved by the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion, by one tenth of a litre to 3.8 litres. That corresponds with an emissions level of 99g/km.

Optimisation of the engine configuration was the focus of the continuing improvement work. The three-cylinder 1.4 TDI with a comparatively high torque of 195Nm allows a high gear ratio. Low wind resistance is also part of the BlueMotion philosophy. This includes good aerodynamics with a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.30 as well as minimum rolling resistance thanks to fuel-saving tyres. The TDI powerplant that comes with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) as standard has a standard consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (previously: 3.9 litres).

Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that its Electronics Research Lab (ERL) and the Stanford University Racing Team will participate in this year's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Urban Challenge on November 3, 2007 with an autonomously-driven diesel-powered Volkswagen Passat wagon.

"After our victory at the last DARPA Grand Challenge, Volkswagen is excited to join the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge," said Dr. Burkhard Huhnke, director, Electronics Research Laboratory, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "We see an opportunity to further advance intelligent technologies for use in passenger vehicles of the future. The features developed for the Urban Challenge will ultimately benefit our customers by making driving safer and more enjoyable in today's increasingly dense traffic."

Autonomous driving is an important topic for Volkswagen Research. The last decade has seen several driver assistance systems come to market that improve the handling in dynamic driving situations. Driver assistance systems such as Electronic Stability control, Electronic Parking Assistance and Adaptive Cruise Control have all been designed and implemented to make the task of driving safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

"While fully autonomous driving may be a possibility for the future, it is not Volkswagen's intent to replace the driver," said Huhnke. "By pursuing a stretch goal, such as an autonomously driven vehicle, we are able to advance certain aspects that will be of use in more conventional and current driver assistance and safety systems."

For this year's DARPA Urban Challenge, the autonomously-driven Passat wagon -- named 'Junior' in homage to Leland Stanford Jr., founder of Stanford University -- will compete on a 60-mile mock urban course that involves merging with traffic, crossing traffic circles and negotiating busy intersections while following traffic laws.

Volkswagen of America's ERL helped outfit the fuel-efficient VW Passat wagon TDI with computer-controlled electromechanical power steering and electric throttle, gear shifter and parking brake. Custom mountings for the wide array of sophisticated sensors were also designed and built at the ERL. Intel Core 2 Duo processors, with multiple processing units per chip, make up the car's "brains." Together with the software developed at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab, the car will be truly autonomous.

"With 'Junior,' our VW Passat wagon, we have the perfect vehicle for the job; just like our Volkswagen Touareg 'Stanley' was for the desert race in 2005," Huhnke added.

Volkswagen won the $2 million grand prize at the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge with a diesel powered Touareg named Stanley. Stanley defeated 22 other unmanned vehicles in a rigorous, 132-mile championship race over rough desert roads, mountain trails, dry lake beds and tunnels, using only onboard sensors and navigation equipment. Stanley performed flawlessly and achieved victory after six hours, 35 minutes.

Best Technological Innovation of the Year: Volkswagen Golf GT Sport with 170 PS Strong TSI and DSG

The Volkswagen Golf GT Sport with TSI engine and dual clutch transmission (DSG) was honored with “Barcelona International Motor Show Award 2007”. In May, the TSI engines brought home to Wolfsburg the “Engine of the Year Award” for their class.

More than 100 automotive projects were nominated for the "Barcelona International Motor Show Awards" this year in Spain. The goal of the competition: To find the best technological innovation of the year.

The Spanish jury for the Volkswagen Golf GT Sport, a car whose powertrain systems are among the most technologically advanced in the world; the engines of the VW Golf GT Sport cover a range from 75 kW to 125 kW. The prize-winning high-end engine, the 125 kW (170 PS) strong TSI, is a prime example of innovative engine charging. Its maximum torque of 240 Newton-meters at a low 1,750 rpm enables an absolutely impressive style of propulsion. After just 7.3 seconds the VW Golf GT Sport is moving at a fast 100 km/h, and its top speed is 220 km/h.

This is contrasted by – and this is decisive – an average fuel consumption of just 7.3 liters per 100 kilometers. This does not change when the Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI is paired with the innovative dual clutch transmission (DSG) either. This transmission, the only one of its kind in the world, unifies the comfort of an automatic and the dynamics and economy of a manual transmission.

Representing Volkswagen in accepting the "Barcelona International Motor Show Award" were Lucas Casasnovas, Volkswagen Brand Manager in Spain, and Michael Schäfer, Director of Dual Clutch Transmission Development. "TSI and DSG", says Michael Schäfer, "underscore Volkswagen’s leadership position in the powertrain area. These technologies also reflect the fact that sportiness and economy definitely do not need to be mutually exclusive."

TSI engines are currently offered on these Volkswagen models: VW Golf, VW Golf Variant, VW Golf Plus, VW CrossGolf, VW Jetta, VW Touran and VW CrossTouran. DSG dual clutch transmission is also available on these models, as well as on the VW Eos, VW Passat and VW Passat Variant.

The awards were initiated by the motor show management and the "Sociedad de Técnicos de Automoción" (STA). STA is the Spanish association of automotive engineers, comparable to the "Association of German Engineers" (VDI), and like VDI it is a member of FISTA, the well-known umbrella organization of automotive engineering associations worldwide.

- Economical: New TSI consumes six percent less fuel
- Powerful: Maximum torque of 200 Nm in reserve at a low 1,500 rpm

Volkswagen 1.4 TSI 90 kW / 122 PS engine
Volkswagen's 1.4 TSI 90 kW / 122 PS engine

Maximum power with minimum fuel consumption – this characteristic has, within a very short period of time, made TSI four-cylinder engines a synonym for a new generation of economical and at the same time sporty Volkswagen engines. Performance specifications: 125 kW / 170 PS and 103 kW / 140 PS. The Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Golf Variant, Volkswagen Golf Plus, Volkswagen Jetta and Volkswagen Touran are powered by them. In 2006 and once again in 2007 they were awarded the coveted “Engine of the Year Award”. Now Volkswagen is presenting the third TSI; this one is 90 kW / 122 PS strong and will be introduced to the Volkswagen Golf lineup this year.

The new TSI will replace the 1.6 FSI with 85 kW / 115 PS in the mid-term. Decisive advantages of the new turbo engine: Besides being able to reduce fuel consumption by about six percent, the engine’s power and torque characteristics were also improved significantly. Due to its smaller displacement, vehicle taxes are also lower. Compared to the 1.6 FSI, maximum torque has now been increased by nearly 30 percent to 200 Newton-meter. And this power is already available at 1,500 rpm. In addition, 80 percent of the maximum torque is already available at speeds as low as 1,250 rpm. In the lower speed range the TSI even exhibits Newton-meter gains of up to 66 percent compared to its predecessor.

Another plus when it comes to economy: Since its maximum torque is available over a broad speed range from 1,500 to 3,500 rpm, conditions are ideal for combining the new Volkswagen TSI with longer and therefore fuel-saving gear ratios. That is why in the future Volkswagen is planning to pair it with the first transverse seven-speed dual clutch transmission in the world (DSG). Its debut will also be in 2007.

Key facts about the new engine at a glance:

* Utilized in models up to the Passat.

Volkswagen Group Awards 2007 presented in Majorca

The 25 best suppliers of the Volkswagen Group were presented with the “Volkswagen Group Award” in Majorca yesterday evening. The winners received their awards from Professor Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, and Francisco J. Garcia Sanz, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for “Procurement”.

"Last year, the Volkswagen Group delivered more vehicles to all major markets worldwide than ever before. This success reflects the efforts we jointly made with our partners last year," said Dr. Winterkorn, welcoming 250 invited guests. "Our thanks go to all representatives of our award winners present here this evening, and in particular to all employees at sites around the world for their extraordinary dedication," Winterkorn added.

At the same time, he announced the further expansion of successful cooperation in future: "Shoulder to shoulder with our partners, we will bring Volkswagen even further forward as regards content and technology. We will take our orientation from the highest quality benchmarks, excellent products and, above all, from the wishes of our customers," Winterkorn said.

"For us, cooperation based on partnership means developing solutions together with our partners and giving special support to those suppliers who show a strong commitment," Francisco J. Garcia Sanz, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG, stressed in the presence of representatives from the award winning suppliers. He emphasized that companies bringing concrete solutions to support Volkswagen in its efforts to enhance competitiveness could simultaneously further strengthen, or even expand, their position as a business partner for Volkswagen.

Since October 2005, Volkswagen has been developing new approaches to optimize costs and improve quality in cooperation with suppliers. Millions have so far been saved through joint optimization efforts at so-called "suppliers conventions". At the beginning of 2006, Volkswagen invited suppliers to a "Suppliers Quality Forum" aimed at achieving a sustained reduction in production process failures. The objective of the "Innovation Forum" is to jointly integrate forward-looking fields of innovation in the production process at Volkswagen.

The Group Award is presented in five categories which play a crucial role in relations with suppliers: excellence in development, product quality, logistics, environmental awareness and entrepreneurial performance.

Six gold awards for Volkswagen Group brands

With six first places, the Volkswagen Group was the most successful company in “Company Cars of the Year 2007”, an event organized by the specialist journal “Firmenauto” and DEKRA, the German motor vehicle inspection association. The best fleet models in a total of nine categories were honored in an overall ranking and an importers ranking. The Volkswagen Group with its Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brands not only won six gold awards, but was also ranked second four times and took four third places.

In the run-up to the award ceremony in Bad Gögging, 150 fleet managers tested 70 different models over a two-day period. This involved more than 1,900 test drives over some 50,000 kilometers. In the compact class, the testers voted the new Golf Variant the winner, while the Touran Eco Fuel took first place in the alternative powertrain category. The Audi Q7 and A8 models convinced the jury in the SUV and top class categories respectively. Skoda won the testers’ vote in the small car category and the van category with the Fabia and the Roomster. The Skoda Fabia even took first place in both the overall ranking and the importers ranking.

"Apart from drive behavior and comfort, efficiency played an important role in the judging. With this achievement, the Volkswagen brands have impressively confirmed the outstanding position of our models in the fleet business," Dr. Stefan Brungs, Head Volkswagen Group Fleet International, commented.

The Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft have independently of each other prepared and today published their Statements pursuant to § 27 of the German Securities Acquisition and Takeover Act (Wertpapiererwerbs- und Übernahmegesetz) concerning the public Mandatory Offer made by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft.

Both corporate bodies have independently of each other reviewed the Mandatory Offer, in particular the consideration offered for the Volkswagen Ordinary and Preference Shares. The Board of Management and the Supervisory Board have each reached a unanimous decision. During the decision making of the Supervisory Board, Supervisory Board members Prof. Dr. Ferdinand Piëch, Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking and Holger P. Härter abstained from voting.

The Statements of the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board contain, inter alia, the following comments:

On the basis of and in consideration of various financial analyses, the Board of Management have convinced themselves that the fundamental value of Volkswagen Shares exceeds the Offer Price for the Volkswagen Ordinary and Preference Shares. With regard to this valuation and the fact that the stock exchange prices for Volkswagen Shares are currently higher than the Offer Prices, the Board of Management cannot recommend the acceptance of the Mandatory Offer.

On the basis of the financial analyses available to the Supervisory Board and the current stock exchange prices of Volkswagen Shares the Supervisory Board concurs with the Management Board's assessment and also comes to the conclusion that it cannot recommend the acceptance of the Mandatory Offer.

Irrespective of this fact, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board point out that each and every Volkswagen Shareholder will have to make their own decision as to whether and by how many Volkswagen Shares they accept the Offer made by Porsche taking into account the overall situation, their own individual circumstances and personal assessment of the potential of the future development of the company, its intrinsic value and the stock exchange price of the Volkswagen Shares.

By making reference to the statutory minimum price Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft offers to pay Volkswagen Shareholders EUR 100.92 per Ordinary Share and EUR 65.54 per Preference Share. The Acceptance Period of the Mandatory Offer commenced on 30 April 2007 and will expire on 29 May 2007.

The complete Statements of the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft concerning the Mandatory Offer made by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft are published on the website of Volkswagen at
