Nissan All-New Second Generation X-Trail SUV

Nissan announced the release of the all-new X-Trail sport utility vehicle (SUV), which goes on sale today at Nissan dealers nationwide. The new X-Trail, the first full redesign of the vehicle since its introduction in 2000, is engineered to be a tough, versatile SUV that stimulates a driver's spirit of adventure. It will be marketed under the tagline "SHIFT_challenging spirit."

The original Nissan X-Trail was developed with the goal of providing customers with a versatile four-passenger, four-wheel drive vehicle at a two million yen price point. Since its launch, the popular X-Trail has been noted for its superior performance, functionality and authentic SUV experience. The all-new X-Trail promises to take the SUV experience to an even higher level, maintaining the original's tough, rugged design while adding elements that maximize owners' enjoyment of outdoor sports.

Nissan X-Trail's "toughness" is highlighted by its enhanced all-weather capability, provided by Nissan's latest electronically controlled four-wheel drive (4WD) system, the ALL MODE 4x4-i with yaw moment control. Also new for this generation Nissan X-Trail is Hill Descent Control (HDC) and Hill Start Assist (HSA). All three systems are designed to provide piece of mind for the driver through superior control and stability.

Additionally, Nissan X-Trail's hallmark high quality and outstanding utility have been enhanced with added convenience and storage features. Highlights of the restyled interior include the use of new water-repellant materials and a larger, washable two-deck luggage compartment.

A Strong Exterior Design
The all-new Nissan X-Trail retains the nameplate's signature styling cues, which are suggestive of the SUV's outstanding off-road capabilities. Extended wheel arches and an aggressive front bumper design give X-Trail a tough stance. The hood slopes to allow a clear view of the vehicle's corners and the three-dimensional headlights continue the strong look. The headlight markers enable drivers to identify the front corners of the vehicle, helping negotiate tight areas whether on an off-road trail or an urban street. Additionally, the A-pillars' obstruction angle has been reduced by 1.2 degrees in comparison to the previous generation X-Trail.

Nissan X-TRAIL's low waistline leads into the styled rear pillars with an "X" motial and also contributes to the good visibility and gives a feeling of roominess to the passenger and luggage areas. The finishing touches are provided by three-dimensional rear combination lamps and a high-mounted LED stop lamp. An integrated "Hyper Roof Rail" is optionally available, as are Bi-level xenon headlights and heated outside mirrors.

The new Nissan X-TRAIL's body has been stiffened for increased stability and reduced NVH. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) were utilized to analyze and improved the X-TRAIL's body design, resulting in improved performance and fuel economy.

Seven exterior colors are available, including a new "Desert Amber" color. Nissan's new Scratch Guard, a transparent coating containing a flexible resin compound, is available with three X-TRAIL body colors - Burning Red, Sapphire Blue and Diamond Black. Scratch Guard enables the paint to "repair" minor scratches within a short period of time.

A Spacious Interior, With Enhanced Utility
X-TRAIL's cabin is designed to allow four adults to travel in comfort and style. The new interior offers improved functionality and quality craftsmanship. The accent lines flowing from the instrument panel to the door trim enhances the roomy feeling, while new soft padding on the instrument panel, door trim and armrests add a substantial yet comfortable sensation.

For maximum adventure without worry, the new X-TRAIL's interior is water-repellant, including the floor and ceiling. X-TRAIL's Seat sides are upholstered in an artificial leather material, while the Seat cushion and the seatback feature a water-repellant diving suit-style material.

X-TRAIL's new instruments and controls provide a performance feel, with a metallic-finished CVT shift lever, large gauges and easy-to-use 4-wheel drive switches. The steering column pops up in a single action for enhanced convenience of use and more effective use of the space around the driver's seat.

Front Seat headroom has been increased by 6 millimeters and knee room by 24 millimeters. Ingress and egress have also been improved by lowering the sill step-over height by 28 millimeters in front and 14 millimeters in the rear.

Utility is enhanced by a large compartment in the instrument panel, and a two-level rear-seat armrest incorporates a pass-through feature for carrying long items easily with the armrest folded down (available on X grade models).

For maximum comfort, the new X-TRAIL features rear-seat air-conditioner vents, the first mid-size SUV to offer that standard feature. Also, covered heating/cooling cup holders are provided in the front and rear Seat areas.

X-TRAIL's rear cargo area has been substantially increased over the previous model, thanks to relocated rear shock absorbers, for a class-leading capacity of 603 liters (VDA). The cargo area features a ribbed, washable luggage board to prevent items from sliding. A removable luggage drawer with movable partitions, located beneath the luggage board, provides hidden storage.

Available Advanced Technology
The new X-TRAIL features Nissan's latest HDD-based CARWINGS navigation system. This system incorporates an easy-to-use touch panel screen, and contains music box and DVD audio/video playback. A Bluetooth hands-free interface is available as a factory option.

Also available on X-TRAIL is Nissan's Intelligent Key System, which, through the ID code stored in the key fob, provides improved anti-theft functionality that includes electric-assisted power steering lockup, engine immobilizer and other deterrents.

Two monitor systems are available as a set on X-TRAIL, a blind-spot monitor and a back-view monitor. The blind-spot monitor increases visibility on the X-TRAIL's left front side, assisting parallel parking or meeting oncoming traffic on a narrow road. The back-view monitor uses a small CCD camera to display on the navigation system monitor a color image of the area behind the X-TRAIL.

A Powerful, Dynamic Engine
X-TRAIL's engine provides superior performance and driving ease. Two engines are offered with X-TRAIL, a 2.0-liter MR20DE featuring an improved exhaust system, or a 2.5-liter QR25DE with continuously variable valve timing control (CVTC) providing an increase in low-speed torque.

A 6-speed manual transmission is available in the 2.0-liter 4-wheel drive model, a unique offering in class. The overdrive sixth gear produces high fuel economy with low noise and vibration.

All other X-TRAIL models feature an XTRONIC Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with revised shift control logic, called Adaptive Shift Control (ASC). ASC adapts to the driver's personal driving style and environment to optimize power and fuel economy. On 2.5-liter equipped X-TRAILs, an XTRONIC CVT-M6 transmission is used, which features a special 6-speed manual shift mode.

MR20DE engine models (4WD, CVT and gross vehicle weight of 1,520 kg or more) achieve fuel economy that is 20% higher than Japan's 2010 fuel economy standards. MR20DE engine models (4WD, 6-speed MT and gross vehicle weight of 1,520 kg or more) and QR25DE engine models achieve fuel economy that is 10% higher than the 2010 standards.

MR20DE engine models are certified as Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (SULEVs) because they emit 75% fewer emissions than Japan's 2005 exhaust emission standards, and QR25DE engine models are certified as U-LEVs because they emit 50% fewer emissions than the standards.

A New Four-Wheel Drive System, Steering, Suspension and Brakes
The new X-TRAIL is available with Nissan's advanced four-wheel drive system, called ALL MODE 4x4-i, incorporating yaw moment control. This new system enhances stability by instantaneously analyzing information received from a steering angle sensor, a yaw rate sensor and a lateral accelerometer to estimate the driver's cornering path and control front/rear torque split for smooth cornering behavior on slippery road surfaces.

The X-TRAIL's ALL MODE 4x4-i incorporates two modes - Auto and Lock. Auto allows the system to vary the front/rear torque split from 100/0 to approximately 50/50 depending on driving conditions, while Lock sets the torque split, which controls engine torque and the brake pressure at all four wheels to deliver powerful traction. Also standard on four-wheel drive models is a Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system.

Other X-TRAIL features include Hill Descent Control (HDC), which maintains a descent speed of 7 km/h (not available with 6-speed manual transmission), and Hill Start Assist (HSA) which prevents the car from rolling backwards when facing uphill by maintaining brake pressure for approximately two seconds after the driver moves his or her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.

X-TRAIL also features a vehicle-speed-sensitive electric-assisted power steering system, with light steering effort at low speed and provides a reassuring steering feel at high speed, while using an electric motor to reduce fuel consumption. Braking is provided with a four-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which adjusts braking force to the front and rear wheels depending on the number of passengers and cargo on board.

The new X-TRAIL's suspension, based on the design utilized in the Dualis, is an independent front strut and rear multi-link design, with advanced shock absorbers. This suspension features optimized geometry and flexibility for both on- and off-road driving.

Safety, Environmental and Sales Figures
X-TRAIL features high-strength Zone Body construction, with impact-energy absorbing body structure for mitigating pedestrian injuries. Passenger safety is enhanced by front-seat Active Head Restraints, dual SRS air bag systems for the driver and front passenger, SRS side air bag systems for the driver and front passenger, double pretensioner seatbelt with two-stage load limiter for the driver and pretensioner seatbelt with load limiter for the front passenger. Additionally, X-TRAIL features a collapsible steering column (excluding models with the pop-up steering column) and brake pedal construction that prevents rearward pedal movement.

X-TRAIL features a recyclability rate of more than 95%1; a clean interior environment with features developed from the three perspectives of clean air, human skin friendly and sanitary/clean; and a Reduction of interior volatile organic compounds (VOC).

The sales target for the all-new X-TRAIL is 2,000 units per month2.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., announced today that all future new models will be equipped with a fuel efficiency gauge to give drivers more information on how their driving style directly relates to fuel economy. The fuel efficiency gauge will also be equipped in current models scheduled for minor product freshenings*1.

The gauge provides the driver with both instant fuel-efficiency and average efficiency readings. For example, by accelerating, the driver would instantly see an increase in fuel consumption reflected on the gauge. Based on Nissan's trials, drivers have tended to improve their eco-driving habits over time, prompted by the real-time fuel-efficiency readings. Driving improvements also included smoother acceleration and braking, which potentially could lead to an average 10% improvement in fuel-efficiency*2.

In January 2007, Nissan introduced the eco-driving information service through its CARWINGS navigation system to promote more economical driving habits*3. Through the installation of the fuel efficiency gauge on the instrument-cluster as a standard feature on all new models, Nissan will extend the awareness of eco-driving to a wider driving audience.

The introduction of the fuel efficiency gauge is in line with the company's overall efforts to launch a wide range of environmental technologies under the Nissan Green Program 2010 mid-term environmental action plan.

*1: Current model range include the SKYLINE, LAFESTA and ATLAS in Japan, and the ALTIMA, INFINITI G35 in the U.S.
*2: 10% average based on Nissan's internal test results. The figure may vary based on individual driving style.
*3: CARWINGS services include listing the average fuel-efficiency of CARWINGS members on the CARWINGS website via monthly rankings and weekly web updates on green driving techniques.

TOKYO (August 6, 2007) -- Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that a new clean diesel technology using high-performance catalysts shows great promise and may be able to meet the State of California's standard for super-ultra-low emission vehicles (SULEVs), equivalent to the Tier2Bin2 emissions requirements. Nissan plans to do further research and development of the clean diesel technology for commercial application in its future products.

Three components work together in Nissan's new technology to reduce diesel emissions: modulated-kinetic (MK) combustion*¹, high-performance catalysts, and advanced engine control systems*².

Nissan's unique Hydrocarbon-Oxides of Nitrogen (HC-NOx) trap catalyst technology comprise a breakthrough construction which incorporates a HC-trap layer in the NOx-trap catalyst. The HC-trap layer serves to trap the HC which is oxidized to generate hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO), which in turn react with the NOx gases trapped by the NOx-trap layer to produce nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gases, in addition to water vapor (H2O) as end products. The chemical reactions effectively reduce HC and NOx resulting in cleaner tail-pipe emissions.

The company had previously announced clean diesel technology that met the U.S. Tier2Bin5 emissions standards. With this new HC-NOx trap catalyst technology, Nissan believes it will be able to achieve cleaner diesel emissions in future vehicles that will meet the stringent SULEV-standards set by the state of California. In order to meet the SULEV-standards, hydrocarbons in vehicle emissions must be exhaust reduced by about 90% and NOx levels must be reduced by 70%*³ versus Tier2Bin5 standards.

Under the Nissan Green Program 2010, Nissan has announced plans to expand clean diesels to surpass current emission standards. Looking ahead, stricter regulations will be imposed in major markets including Japan, US, and Europe within the next few years.

Structure of HC-NOx-trap catalyst and NOx reduction steps:
1)NO is oxidized and NOx is absorbed by the trap layer
2)HC is absorbed by the HC trap layer
3)The system uses O2 with HC to generating H2 and CO which together perform a highly efficient NOx chemical reaction.

*1:MK combustion curbs toxic emissions at its origin-phase by simultaneously reducing oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulates

*2:New engine systems exerts more precise control of oxygen in the exhaust for better fuel efficiency and less emissions

*3:0.0062g/km(0.01g/mile) of HC(NMOG) against 0.0559g/km(0.09g/mile), and 0.0124 g/km(0.02g/mile) of NOx against 0.0435g/km(0.07g/mile) made possible by previous Tier2Bin5 technology

The global launch of Nissan’s light duty truck continues after launch in Europe and Japan

Nissan today announced the Nissan Cabstar global light duty truck, known as Atlas in Japan, will be introduced in Mexico and Taiwan. The announcement follows the global debut in Europe in September 2006 and Japan, in June 2007.

Due to arrive in August, the Nissan Cabstar will be the first light duty truck from Nissan to be introduced in Mexico. In Taiwan, the next generation Cabstar will be introduced by November 2007, to spearhead Yulon-Nissan’s bid to establish a stronger position in the Taiwanese commercial light duty truck segment.

The Nissan Cabstar will be built at the Yulon Motor plant in SanYi for both domestic market and export to Mexico. Production of the Cabstar will start in November 2007 for the Taiwanese market.

For Mexico, the Nissan Cabstar will initially be sourced from Nissan’s light duty truck plant in Avila (Spain) before production will shift to Taiwan in December. Initial production at Avila will be limited to 2,200 units bound for Mexico, to ensure a timely launch.

The Avila factory has been established as the “mother plant” for the Nissan Cabstar. The engineers at the plant have developed a global standard for the Cabstar production process which is then duplicated by other production sites worldwide. The “Nissan Production Way” ensures that each Cabstar truck built around the world meets with the high quality standards set by Nissan.

The all-new Cabstar is built on Nissan’s new global light duty truck platform. This unique platform will provide the base for Nissan’s next generation medium-heavy vans and light duty trucks.

“The all-new Nissan Cabstar embodies all the core elements of our Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) strategy,” said Andy Palmer, Corporate Vice President of Nissan’s LCV business unit. “In developing the Cabstar, we begun with the needs of the customers and created a reliable and efficient truck with smart solutions that support their busy work-day. The all-new Cabstar offers class leading functionality and manoeuvrability, with low cost of ownership,” added Palmer.

The launch of the all-new Nissan Cabstar in Mexico and Taiwan supports the strategy to expand the Nissan LCV business into new markets with the long-term goal to achieve a leading position in the global LCV market by 2010.
The all new Nissan X-Trail, on sale from 1 September, will have a starting price of £18,795 for the entry level 2.0-litre petrol TREK rising to £26,720 for the more luxurious upgraded AVENTURA 150PS 2.0dCi automatic. In some cases the increase in price over the outgoing model is as low as £100 representing excellent value especially considering the vehicle is larger, better equipped and with more modern and refined engines.

There are three grades and four engine variations to choose from with three of the power units being new to Nissan X-Trail. To simplify the Nissan 4x4 range structure the grade names of
TREK, SPORT and AVENTURA for X-Trail have been taken from the Pathfinder.

Although Nissan X-Trail has been completely restyled, customer research clearly showed that the robust, strong shape was popular and well appreciated. Indeed, it was a key factor in the decision making process for many buyers. It was clear that the “X-TRAILness” had to be retained, which is why there is a clear family resemblance between the original and the new version – a perfect example of evolutionary change.

New from the ground up, the latest Nissan X-Trail shares the same platform as the recently launched Nissan QASHQAI. The platform features strut-type suspension at the front with a multi-link system at the rear, both ends being mounted on separate rubber insulated sub-frames providing enhanced refinement and isolation from vibrations which in turn gives a superior ride both on and off-road.

As a result, new Nissan X-Trail is slightly larger than before: its wheelbase has increased by 5mm to 2630mm, while overall length has risen by 175mm to 4630mm. Much of this extra length can be found in the luggage area, which has increased dramatically in size.

With the rear Seat in place, the original vehicle had a luggage area VDA measurement of 410 litres up to the lower edge of the rear window: in the new Nissan X-Trail the equivalent figure is 603 litres, an increase of 193 litres (including double deck trunk capacity). Fold the rear seats forward and this increases to 1773 litres.

This has been achieved by rerouting the exhaust silencer from its original transverse position under the boot floor to a north/south location alongside the rear wheel well. This has allowed the creation of an innovative double deck trunk, with space for a sliding drawer under the floor where valuable items can be stored away from prying eyes.

The drawer has partition walls that can be placed in a number of different positions or removed altogether as required. The floor and the drawer can both be removed to increase load space even further: as a result the trunk area of the new Nissan X-Trail is deeper and wider than the original and, even with the false floor in place, virtually as tall. With it removed, trunk height is increased by 127mm over the original.

But that’s not all. To ensure maximum practicality, the floor has been finished in a tough and easy-to-clean non-slip plastic surface. Raised ribs have been placed at unequal distances apart to help prevent loads shifting when the vehicle is on the move. Full carpeting was rejected for the trunk as customer research showed that many owners either carried dogs or outdoor sports equipment in the rear of their X-TRAIL and preferred a wipe clean surface.

The interior improvements continue with Nissan’s practice of providing much higher levels of quality and premiumness than expected for the class of car. Soft feel materials feature on all touch points throughout the cockpit. And as with other recent Nissan models, X-TRAIL has been created with versatility and practicality uppermost.

Positioning the instrument cluster behind the multi-function steering wheel has allowed greater versatility in the centre console, which can now house a larger navigation screen closer to eye level as well as providing space for an in-dash multi disc CD changer.

For the first time, X-TRAIL offers two levels of turbo-diesel power. Both engines are versions of the highly regarded 2.0-litre M1D unit already fitted in QASHQAI which combines high outputs and good economy with class-leading refinement. The 150PS is available on all grades and returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 39.8mpg and 190g/km of CO2 . Compare the fuel economy and CO2 with the out-going 2.2dCi 136PS engine (37.2mpg/ 203g/km CO2) and improvements made are 6.9% and 6.4% respectively.

With the help of an intercooler comes the second version producing 173PS available on the SPORT and AVENTURA. Fuel economy using the combined cycle is 38.2mpg with an output of 198g/km CO2.

Torque outputs for both versions are 320Nm and 360Nm respectively, 90 per cent of which is developed at a low 1750rpm. These engines are also fitted with particulate filters to minimise emissions.

The 173PS engine should also prove to be popular with the towing fraternity as it has a class leading maximum braked trailer weight of 2200kg.

A new lightweight all-alloy 16 valve 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 141PS and 196Nm of torque is fitted to the TREK. It was development led by Nissan and unusually for a petrol engine, much of the torque is produced low down the rev band – 90 per cent is available from 2400rpm. It returns a combined fuel consumption figure of 32.5mpg and has a CO2 figure of 208g/km.

Although carried over from the original X-TRAIL, the 2.5-litre 169PS petrol engine has been further improved for greater refinement and better efficiency. Providing excellent low-to mid-range torque figures – peak torque is 233Nm – the engine comes on both the SPORT and AVENTURA grades and produces 29.4mpg and 230g/km of CO2.

The 2.0dCi 150PS is £800 more than the 2.5 petrol whilst it will cost a further £1000 to upgrade between diesel engines.

All engines are fitted with six speed manual transmissions but if you would rather give your left foot a rest then there is now a choice of automatics on both diesel and petrol versions. The 2.5 petrol has the latest fuel efficient constantly variable transmission (CVT) costing an additional £1200 with lower fuel consumption and CO2 than the equivalent manual – returning 30.4mpg and 223g/km CO2. The 150PS diesel has the option of a conventional 6 speed automatic for a further £1100. The higher powered diesel is only available in manual form.

TREK may be the first in the line up but it is not short on equipment with Bluetooth phone integration, 16" alloy wheels, full body coloured bumpers, climate controlled air conditioning, a full suite of airbags – driver, passenger, side and curtain, plus a CD / radio with 4 speakers.

The SPORT version starting from £20,695 encompasses all of TREK’s equipment but the alloys change to a larger 17", the stereo system is upgraded to a 6 stack CD auto-changer with 6 speakers and remote control, the front grille gets a chrome look and front fog lamps are also added, along with a large panoramic sunroof, privacy glass, cruise control, reach adjust steering and a ski hatch. Include auto-on for the headlamps, wipers and speed activated central locking, then the package is complete. Compare this vehicle to the outgoing Columbia 2.2dCi and there is only a £100 increase in price.

For a further £2000 the AVENTURA offers a choice of either Black or Sand coloured leather upholstery, heated and powered front seats, intelligent key and electric folding door mirrors with chrome exterior door handles.

All X-TRAILs are equipped with Nissan’s ALL-MODE 4x4 system which operates in two-wheel drive only to minimise fuel consumption and transfers into four-wheel drive mode as and when the vehicle detects it is needed, or manually selected by the driver. The SPORT and AVENTURA on the new X-TRAIL however get the very latest intelligent edition known as ALL-MODE 4x4-i incorporating Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Uphill Start Support (USS) and Downhill Drive Support (DDS).

USS is a fully automatic system that activates on any slope that exceeds a 10 per cent incline, holding the vehicle on the brakes until the driver starts to move away. The system also works if the vehicle is reversing up an incline.

DDS – operated via a switch on the centre console – operates when ALL-MODE is in lock mode. DDS uses the anti-lock brakes to maintain a descent speed of 5mph allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Like USS, DDS also works when the vehicle is in reverse.

On SPORT and AVENTURA grades there are upgrade models available to further enhance the specification list. The SPORT eXpedition costs £1700 more and includes DVD satellite navigation, rear parking camera, intelligent key and chrome exterior door handles. The AVENTURA eXplorer has the same price increase but adds xenon powered headlamps, DVD satellite navigation and rear parking camera. eXtreme is the second upgrade on both SPORT and AVENTURA which adds stylish roof rails with integrated lamps for a further £425.

Pricing overview:

  • TREK starting price – £18,795 (2.0 petrol)
  • SPORT starting price – £20,695 (2.5 petrol)
  • AVENTURA – starting price £22,695 (2.5 petrol)
  • To upgrade from 2.5 petrol to 2.0dCi 150PS add £800

Nissan's New Field Quality Center to focus on vehicle quality improvement process

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has opened a new Field Quality Center (FQC) based at the Nissan Technical Center (Atsugi-shi, Kanagawa), to focus on vehicle quality enhancement processes. The center will conduct Field Quality Investigation Analysis (FQIA) to identify the root cause and solutions to vehicle problems.

The FQC serves as a central collection base for incident parts received directly from the dealerships, where the parts are then subjected to detailed analysis. The FQC is equipped with state-of-the-art testing-equipment and measuring instruments that can replicate actual field conditions in order define the root cause of the problem. This allows the FQC to identify the customers’ vehicle problem earlier and find a solution more quickly, in order to implement the right countermeasures to the products.

The FQC works jointly with the product development and manufacturing engineer teams in order to facilitate a continuous “quality improvement” process. The FQC findings are fed back to the Nissan Technical Center (NTC), where future generation vehicles are being developed.

Nissan Senior Vice President, Total Customer Satisfaction, Kazumasa Katoh said, “The FQC will boost Nissan’s ability to deliver higher customer satisfaction. At the FQC, we will work to improve the quality of Nissan’s vehicles from every aspect in accordance with the Nissan Product Quality Policy (NPQP).” By applying the philosophy of “san-gen shugi” i.e. “the principle of three-origins”, Nissan will endeavor to find solutions to quality issues by seeking out the root of the problem from three perspectives – the real part (genbutsu), on-site vehicle operating conditions (genba) and fact-based data (genjitsu).

Nissan has invested 900 million yen ($7.29million*) into the FQC, which occupies a 4,400m2 area, within the Nissan Technical Center campus. Approximately 210 employees will be based at the FQC. Construction and installation of state-of-the-art test-equipment, including a 4-Axis Vibration Machine**, were completed in June, 2007. The FQC facility was designed to facilitate collaborative efforts with working areas dedicated to manufacturing engineer teams and supplier-partners. Currently, the FQC is host to 10 quality projects in collaboration with different auto-parts suppliers.

With investments made in the new FQC facility, Nissan is able to process four times the quantity of parts-investigation compared to its previous capacity. Prior to FQC, Nissan’s field quality improvement team was located at the Shinkoyasu Operations Center in Yokohama.

Globally, Nissan has three other FQC facilities in operation since 2006, two located in the U.S at Smyrna and Farmington Hills and another in Cranfield, U.K. for Europe. The FQC in Atsugi will serve the Japan domestic market as well as more than 140 countries in the General Overseas Market (GOM). All four global FQC facilities collaborate closely through constant exchange of information in order to enhance Nissan’s global standard of quality.

Nissan is investing in its future through innovation. Recent major investments include the Nissan Global Training Center (GTC) to train global experts in the Nissan Production Way (NPW), Nissan Global Production Engineering Center (GPEC) to standardize production engineering and global manufacturing processes, and Nissan Advanced Technology Center (NATC) to focus on breakthrough technologies for the future.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today released its fourth annual Sustainability Report, which outlines Nissan's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy and the nine key areas of corporate activity.

In April 2005, Nissan established a CSR group within its communications division with the responsibility to create a methodology to strengthen the company's CSR strategies, enhance its external image, and promote internal communication.

One year later, Nissan formulated its CSR Policy*1, identified nine key areas of focus*2, and also established a CSR Steering Committee. The committee serves to monitor the company's progress through the Nissan CSR scorecard. The scorecard is a tool to monitor the progress, while taking into account future goals and analyzing future risks and opportunities, in each of the nine key areas. This year's report makes public the progress made towards annual goals detailed in the CSR scorecard.

"This is not an exercise designed to project a halo over everything we do. It is the annual milestone in a process of transparent measurement that becomes more rigorous each year," said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. "We hope this Sustainability Report can serve as a measure of our progress and a basis for dialogue with our stakeholders*3."

Consistent to its environmental goals, Nissan no longer publishes the Sustainability Report in print. Instead, the report is available for download from the company's CSR website. The CSR site has been enhanced to allow for more comprehensive and timely information sharing and to better respond to the needs of stakeholders and CSR rating agencies.

*1 The Nissan CSR Policy
"Ethical conduct, strong corporate governance with a high degree of transparency and a clear focus on diversity are the foundation for all our activities worldwide. We aim for the sustained profitable growth of the company, and at the same time contribute proactively to the sustainable development of mobility and society. We will listen to, and work with, our stakeholders around the world and create trust, opportunity and long-term sustainable value."
*2 Nine key areas
Nissan's nine key areas of focus for CSR activity are integrity, economic contribution, brand, quality, environment, employees, safety, value chain and philanthropy.
*3 Stakeholders
Nissan's stakeholders include customers, shareholders, employees, dealers and suppliers, as well as the communities in which the company works and operates.

Nissan Europe, Marubeni Corporation and Marubeni Europe Plc signed an agreement on 6 June 2007 agreeing on the terms and conditions under which Nissan Europe may purchase from Marubeni Corporation and Marubeni Europe Plc, 100% of the shares in Nissan Belgium N.V.. The effective purchase of the shares in Nissan Belgium N.V is subject to certain conditions, including prior approval of the Belgian Competition Board.

This purchase would signify that Nissan Belgium would become a full Nissan entity and no longer be an independent importer. Depending on required conditions being fulfilled, Nissan Belgium could start operating as a Nissan entity in July.

Nissan Belgium was created in 1966 and yearly sales rose to more then 30,000 vehicles during peak years. Sales totalled approximately 12,000 units in 2006.

As part of Nissan Europe's strategy for growth, this agreement comes at a period of reorganisation within Nissan's business structure in Europe. The move would strengthen the company's position in the market-place by maximizing efficiencies and improving service levels. It would also allow Nissan Belgium to invest in the future, and to support Nissan's plans for growth in Europe.

Nissan employs around 12,000 people in its European design, research and development, manufacturing, logistics, and sales and marketing operations. Last year, the company produced a total of 506,602 vehicles in its Spanish and British plants. Nissan Europe's Head Office is based in Trappes (Paris), France.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the release of the fully redesigned Atlas F24 light-duty truck, which goes on sale June 20 at Nissan dealers nationwide.

The new Atlas F24 is designed for maximum utility, versatility and efficiency for a variety of commercial uses. Its "intelligent design" concept combines a comfortable, highly functional interior with exceptional maneuverability and low operational cost. Among the Atlas F24's features are class-leading minimum turning radius, Nissan's first-ever application of a 6-speed automatic mechanical transmission (6AMT) and a vehicle operating information display.

A Modern, Intelligent Design

* The Atlas F24's exterior was inspired by the concept of a modern, comfortable and "smart" truck. Its large windshield allows an excellent forward view, while its sloping waistline expands side visibility. Outstanding aerodynamics are provided by the cab's rounded cubic shape.

Inside, the Atlas F24's cabin comfort has been enhanced by increasing the cab height and expanding the space in front of the seats. The larger door openings, lower cab floor height and lower step-in height improve entry/exit ease over the previous model. Walk-through capability has also been improved.

Along with additional comfort, the Atlas F24's interior is designed to increase work efficiency with a number of handy, easy-to-use storage areas, including a large storage box incorporated into the multifunction center seat.

Standard technology features include a new vehicle operating information display, which supports eco-driving and easy maintenance work by showing real-time fuel consumption and other operating data, as well as an engine immobilizer and a remote control entry system.

Fuel-Efficient Performance and Reduced Emissions

* The Atlas F24's newly developed ZD30DDTi engine is mated to Nissan's first-ever 6-speed automatic mechanical transmission (6AMT), delivering both class-leading fuel economy and the powerful performance for stress-free city driving with frequent acceleration and deceleration.

The 6AMT transmission combines an electronically controlled shift unit with a base manual transmission. Therefore, the Atlas F24 can be driven by persons whose licenses are limited to automatic transmission vehicles, since clutching and shifting operations are fully automated. Besides allowing the driving ease of automatic transmission vehicles, the 6AMT achieves fuel consumption at a level on par with manual transmission vehicles. In addition, the Atlas F24's proactive control system with the Easy Hill Start (EHS) system ensures easy uphill launches, even when carrying heavy loads.

From an environmental perspective, Atlas F24 models fitted with the new ZD30DDTi engine reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions by an additional 10% from Japan's 2005 exhaust emission regulations and are certified as low-emission heavy-duty vehicles. They also comply with the low-emission vehicle designation system adopted by eight Kanto region prefectures/cities, as well as a similar system adopted by seven Kansai region prefectures/cities.

Agile maneuverability in tight places is provided by the Atlas F24's class-leading turning radius. The 1.5-ton Short body models and the 1.5/2.0-ton Standard body models feature minimum turning radius of 4.2 meters and 4.4 meters, respectively.

The gross vehicle weight of all Atlas F24 models is less than five tons, enabling them to be operated by persons with new ordinary driver's licenses.**

Nissan is to invest a further £2.4 million (580 million yen) in its Sunderland plant, to increase Nissan QASHQAI production.

The cash injection will help boost Nissan QASHQAI volume by the 20% needed to keep pace with customer demand for the compact crossover, launched in February this year.

Since then, more than 60,000 units have rolled off the line, with approximately a further 130,000 forecast before the end of the 2007 financial year.

The additional investment will be used to make facility improvements on the Nissan QASHQAI line, which is working to fulfil excellent demand for the car right across Europe - the order bank for the European region is now approaching 60,000 units.

Nissan QASHQAI, which recently scored a maximum 5-stars in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) adult occupant safety test, is also proving to be a big hit in Japan, where sales started on May 23rd.

Although Japanese sales were initially targeted at 2,000 units per month, the car - renamed Nissan Dualis in Japan - has received more than 7,000 orders until last week.

Sunderland Plant's Deputy Managing Director Kevin Fitzpatrick commented: "QASHQAI is proving extremely popular and will help us achieve a record production year in '07.

"Supporting this level of customer demand is very challenging and our manufacturing employees deserve a lot of credit for how hard they are working, but this is the kind of challenge every car plant should welcome.

"The additional investment from Japan will complement the measures we are introducing here such as moving NOTE production onto our second line in September, to free up capacity for QASHQAI."

Notes:

* The cash injection brings total investment by Nissan in its Sunderland Plant to £2.38 billion.
* The most recent 2007 volume forecast is 390,000 units.
* The plant's current peak production year was 2003 when 332,000 cars were produced.

Nissan Micra C+C
Nissan Micra C+C

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that the new Nissan Micra C+C will go on sale at dealers across Japan beginning on July 23. This unique, limited volume "coupe/convertible," imported from Europe, has been modified for the Japanese market.

The Nissan Micra C+C is noted for its power-retractable glass roof that opens or closes at the touch of a button in about 22 seconds. With the roof closed, the car has a stylish appearance suggestive of a hardtop coupe. With the top down, the Nissan Micra C+C offers the open-air ambience of a classic convertible. The name Micra was coined from the word "micro" and the letters "C+C" stand for Coupe plus Convertible. It has been highly popular in Europe since it first debuted there in November 2005.

A Distinctive European Flavor

* Offering the same outstanding convenience as the Nissan March, the Nissan Micra C+C continues the user-focused design and premium quality that distinguish the Micra/March*1 - but with a strong European influence inside and out.

The Nissan Micra C+C's sporty appearance is accentuated by a glass roof that gives the car a unified look from windshield to trunk. Karmann, the renowned European convertible manufacturer, developed and supplies the retractable glass roof. In the up position, the glass top blocks 93% of ultraviolet radiation to protect occupants against sunburn. A shade is also provided to mitigate direct exposure to sunlight. Karmann's logo is stamped on the lower part of the body.

The combination of a low vehicle height and distinctive character line running from the cabin to the rear adds to the Nissan Micra C+C's image of elegant sportiness. The look is completed by a unique grille, front bumper, tailpipe finisher and sill protectors. Five attractive body colors are offered, including Breeze Blue Metallic.

The Nissan Micra C+C's airy, spacious interior abounds in natural light, with its inviting ambience evoking a warm, roomy feeling. Thanks to its versatile roof design, the interior can be enjoyed year-round, regardless of the season or weather.

Heated seats, perfect for comfortable open-top driving, are upholstered in a combination of genuine leather and a suede-like fabric, achieving a modern, high-quality yet casual look and feel. The driver's seat can be adjusted to an optimum driving position for drivers of various sizes, utilizing a lifter that moves the cushion vertically 30 mm and fore/aft sliding travel of 240 mm. Lumbar support is also provided to ensure a comfortable driving posture.

The black trim is highlighted with metallic accents for a sporty image, while the fresh, stylish ice-blue trim underscores a refined sense of fashion. The Nissan Micra C+C's interior also features white-faced instruments, a trip computer and an abundance of handy storage spaces - including a convenient, secret lockable storage box located under the front passenger seat.

The trunk offers a storage capacity of 457 liters(VDA) with the roof closed and 255 liters when the roof is lowered and stored away. A wide trunk opening and a low lift-over height provide easy loading and unloading of cargo.

Spirited Driving Performance

* The Nissan Micra C+C is exclusively fitted with the HR16DE engine that delivers smooth acceleration and outstanding responsiveness for sporty and spirited driving enjoyment. This engine is not used on the March in Japan.

The suspension system, designed specifically for the Nissan Micra C+C, works in tandem with high body stiffness to provide supple ride comfort and superior driving stability.

Standard safety equipment on all models includes dual SRS air bag systems and dual SRS side air bag systems for both the driver and front passenger, as well as additional safety features.

Pricing, Manufacturing and Sales Target

* The Nissan Micra C+C is produced at Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd as a 2007 model. Pricing begins at 2,499,000yen, including consumption tax. Nissan plans limited sales of 1,500 imported vehicles. The Nissan Micra C+C is being marketed under the tagline of "SHIFT_happiness."

*1 - The European specification version of the Nissan March is sold under the Micra model name in Europe.
*2 - Because the Nissan Micra C+C is an imported car, its specifications differ from those of the Japanese market Nissan March.

TOKYO (May 29, 2007)-Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., today announced that its new Global Production Engineering Center (GPEC) has begun full-scale operations. The new state-of-the-art center for production engineering is located at Nissan's Zama Operations Center in Kanagawa Prefecture. As the focal point for production engineering and development for all of Nissan's production facilities worldwide, GPEC will play a key role in redefining Nissan's global standards in manufacturing. The center aims to develop breakthrough technologies in manufacturing processes, focusing on enhancing quality, productivity and development lead time.

"The new GPEC and Global Training Center (GTC) represent long-term investments for Nissan in terms of delivering high-quality products to our customers worldwide. Both facilities are critical to the continued evolution of the Nissan Production Way (NPW) as a proven global standard," said Nissan Executive Vice President, Hidetoshi Imazu. "As we cut down the development lead time to introduce more new products and build them across the world, it is important that Nissan maintains the high levels of quality that our customers expect."

Operations at the new GPEC will focus on intensive production trial and analysis for new vehicle production, covering every stage of the production process, from the press shop, to body -welding and vehicle assembly. At GPEC, the goal is to refine the quality and efficiency at the production trial stage, and ensure a consistent level of quality is achieved at the start of production (SOP) for a new vehicle, at all of Nissan's plants worldwide.

Under the Nissan Value-Up mid-term business plan, the company announced it will conduct 70 unique SOP events globally, with 30 still remaining for 2007 alone. The newly completed GPEC centralized production trial and analysis processes will contribute to these SOP events this year.

Since 2005, Nissan has been implementing V-3P (*1) in order to reduce development lead time. V-3P is an advanced multi-dimension digital design and engineering software program that allows the parallel development of design, engineering and production processes through virtual data manipulation. When a new vehicle project reaches its confirmation milestone, there is an immense amount of digital data available such as those related to the die, jig and tooling.

With the set of relevant data, the engineers at GPEC can set up a trial production line for the vehicle that is consistent to the Nissan Integrated Manufacturing System (NIMS). By employing this technology, the engineers can fully monitor, control and rectify all the parameters to ensure a smooth and seamless production process at the actual SOP. The final programs developed at GPEC can be accurately and exactly duplicated to any of Nissan's global manufacturing sites. Each plant can then start up a new vehicle production in a faster timeframe whilst maintaining the high quality standards.

Construction of GPEC commenced in October 2005 at Area 2 of the Zama Operations Center. With a total investment of 5.1 billion yen, the completed facility boasts an area of 30,000m2, which will accommodate 300 employees. The center includes a pilot plant designed to test equipment destined for overseas locations. It also conducts body-welding testing and other systems analysis. GPEC will serve as a centralized facility for all production trials and analysis for all future products.

*1: V-3P: Value-Up Innovation of Product, Process and Program is an advanced vehicle development process that aims to reduce development lead time from 20.75 to 10.50 months, stretching from design approval to new model launch.
*2: NIMS evolved from the Nissan Standard Line and was developed to deliver high quality new products at the global level in a shorter timeframe.

GPEC Fact Sheet
Facility Name: Global Production Engineering Center (GPEC)
Location: Zama Operations Center (Hironodai 2-10-1, Zama City, Kanagawa)
